Background Checks
The YMCA of Greater Dayton conducts criminal background checks on all new employees and high-access volunteers. Background checks are conducted by Assure Hire and Sterling. Background checks are currently housed with HR and VolunteerMatters.
Process for reviewing criminal convictions discovered through the criminal background check:
- The HR department will review all staff background checks.
- Sports Task Team Lead/Branch Executive will review Sterling for Sports Coaches.
- The Volunteer Coordinator will review background checks for other branch volunteers.
Evaluation Criteria for Hits on Background Checks
The YMCA of Greater Dayton follows the State of Ohio regulations regarding criminal background checks for employees and volunteers. For positions within our licensed child care programs, we strictly adhere to the list of disqualifying convictions established by the State of Ohio. Any conviction that appears on the state’s prohibited offenses list automatically disqualifies an individual from working or volunteering within our child care centers.
For positions outside of child care, criminal background check results are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. During this review, we consider several factors including the nature and severity of the offense, the age of the conviction, and the number or pattern of charges or convictions. This allows us to evaluate whether the conviction may reasonably impact the individual’s ability to safely and effectively perform the responsibilities of the position.
If there is uncertainty regarding whether a conviction should disqualify a candidate, the HR leader consults with the appropriate Branch Executive. In these situations, the Branch Executive may meet with the prospective employee or volunteer to gather additional context about the legal matter before a final employment decision is made.
